Notes:
"As I recall the story, an aunt of ours - Anne Alexander [048] - went to Canada and sent for her 10 year old son, Robert (Bertie); at that young age, he was sent across the Atlantic to his mother, who within a very short time, seemed to abandon him in Toronto. For decades, we did not know what had happened either to him or to his mother.

Then in the 1980s, some contact was made (a telephone call to Bill [006] ) and in 1987, Ella ( [026] ) and I visited Toronto and were very well entertained by Bob (aka Bertie) and his wife Almira....In 1987, we also met Barbara's daughter Yvonne, an 11 yr old schoolgirl, Bob's granddaughter. Bob and Almira and also Barbara have since died. (Almira was a recognised Canadian artist, commissioned by Calgary Government to paint pictures of Grain Elevators in the prairies of Canada.) Sandra Nicol [173] (usually called Sandy) is a teacher for special needs children at a high school in Toronto.

We will never know the full story about Bertie Nicol; he discovered after she died that his mother had in fact lived much of the remainder of her life only two or three miles away from him! He was not at all bitter about his unusual history..."
